Dean Smith Leaves Each Player A $200 Check In His Will To Buy Dinner

Call it one last gesture from a coach that always loved his players, but former North Carolina coach Dean Smith left all the letter winners that played for him during his 36 years as coach of the Tar Heels a check for $200. Coach Smith died last month at the age of 83 and he directed the trustee to his will to mail out checks to each of the letter winners.

Tim Breedlove, the trustee to Smith’s will, told ESPN there were about 180 letters and checks sent out on Monday. Breedlove said, “This was the kind of man that he was. It’s one more example of his thoughtfulness.”

A photo of one of the letters sent to the players went viral today. One of Smith’s former players said this would not be the way Smith would have wanted it. as he would have preferred to keep it all quiet. However, that is not the case and the story leaked to the media and we are glad, as this is a class act move and should be talked about.

The letter stated to “enjoy a dinner out compliments of Coach Dean Smith.” What an amazing gesture from one of the greatest coaches in NCAA history.
