Bizarre Undersea Spaghetti Critter Is Discovered
There is a weird, white creature that’s currently floating around upside down off the shores of Angola. It actually looks like a bowl of upside down noodles, hence it’s been called a “flying spaghetti monster.” However, its “real” name is Bathyphysa conifer (a.k.a. siphonophore).
According to researchers from the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, England, this weird creature is related to jellyfish and corals since it’s composed of various multi-cellular organisms known as zooids. These are different though, since they’re not solitary and thus link together to form a more complex organism. Each of the individual zooids have a specific job, such as catching food, eating, and reproducing.
This species is relatively rare, and was recently videotaped by BP, who dubbed the organism the flying spaghetti monster due to its weird appearance. However, Catriona Munro, a doctoral student in ecology and evolutionary biology at Brown University thinks it is “really good-looking.”
