Taiwanese Exchange Student Gets Gored In Buttocks At Yellowstone National Park
On Saturday, May 16th, authorities from Yellowstone National Park revealed that a 16-year-old girl was gored by a wild bison. The girl’s name has not been released, but she is an exchange student from Taiwan.
The girl was hiking close to the Old Faithful Geyser, alongside her established family. They came across several wild bison grazing near the trail, so the family decided to take a photo. When the group turned their backs on the animals, which were only a few feet away, one of the bison gored the exchange student in her buttocks. The girl was treated at the Old Faithful clinic at the park, and even though her wounds were not life-threatening, she was airlifted to a nearby hospital.
Traci Weaver, a spokeswoman for the park, said that “They were photographing this animal so very close where the bison was standing. The bison reacted the way any wild animal would”. She also went on to say that the park recommends visitors stay about 100 yards away from animals like bears and wolves, while animals like bison and elk need a berth of about 25 yards. Bison can run about three times faster than humans.
