Mother Throws Her 11 Month Old Baby From Burning Building

The second floor of an apartment building in Anderson, South Carolina, caught fire on Tuesday night with fire bellowing out of the windows. A mother and her 11-month-old son were trapped in an adjacent room, and the mother made a split-second decision to drop her baby to a stranger standing below.

The man standing below was a former marine, and a video released shows the woman lifting her baby in the air slightly before letting go of him. Thankfully the man caught the child and the baby boy only suffered a few minor scratches from being caught next to a bush. Shortly after letting go of her child, the woman jumps out from the second floor, landing safely.

Fire Chief Michael Guest, from the Anderson Fire Department, said that the marine was a neighbor of the woman, and that he did not want any attention or praise – he simply did what was needed to be done. Guest revealed that the fire started when one of the residents in the apartment left food cooking unattended, and the person was unable to put out the initial fire with a fire extinguisher.

A spokesman for Anderson Fire Department said “it was definitely unintentional. We are so glad that the baby was gotten out without significant injuries.”
