Kid Survives Being Mauled By A Bear While Camping

A camping trip came to a terrifying stop when a teenage boy was attacked by a bear while asleep. 16-year-old Gabriel Alexander was attacked at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at approximately 10:30 PM at a campsite with his father. USA Today reports that the incident left some major marks on Gabriel, but he should be fine. “The bear left deep gashes on Gabriel’s scalp and face before his father, Greg Alexander, chased off the animal. Gabriel is now recovering at Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C.”

All signs point to Gabriel making a full recovery, which is good news. Further research shows that the Alexanders didn’t provoke the bear into an attack, and the bear was eventually euthanized at the campsite when it made a return visit. Dana Soehn, the park’s spokeswoman, said they were concerned about the continuing violent behavior the bear showed, and it became a threat to other humans that will camp in that area. For now, that section of the park is closed off.
