Judge Sentences Woman To Walk 30 Miles For Ditching $100 Cab Fare

A judge took a unique approach when sentencing a woman that decided to ditch the $100 cab fare she accumulated while traveling between Cleveland and Painesvile in Ohio. Judge Michael A. Cicconetti first sentenced Victoria Bascom to 30 days in jail for not paying for the taxi ride, but then he came up with a unique alternative: walk the distance that $100 cab fare would cover, 30 miles.

Bascom was told she could either spend 30 days in jail or she could walk the 30 miles within 48 hours and avoid any time in jail. Judge Cicconetti said, “If you can’t afford a cab, what would you do? Walk. So I think it’s appropriate that you walk the 30 miles, instead of jail. It’s going to get boring, but if you don’t want to go to jail, you do that.”

No big shocker here, but Bascom agreed to do the 30-mile walk instead of jail time. She was also ordered to pay back the $100 cab fare, as well as completing three days of community service. It all seems like an easier task then spending 30 days in jail, but props to the judge for coming up with the crazy alternative!
