Florida Passes Bill Allowing Teachers To Carry Guns In Classrooms

Florida has narrowly passed a bill that will allow teachers to carry guns in the state’s classrooms. This comes three weeks to the day of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school where 17 people were killed and 16 more injured by Nikolas Cruz.

The new legislation, which still has to be approved by Florida’s governor, increases the age of purchasing guns from 18 to 21, adds a waiting period and provides more money to schools for security and mental health support. This bill was backed by the families of the Parkland massacre victims, but was opposed by Democrats who failed – with the vote 67-50.

It’s unclear if the governor will approve the bill, “I’m going to take the time to read the bill,” he told reporters. “I have been clear. I don’t believe we should be arming teachers.”

While arming teachers may not be the best idea, increasing the restrictions on gun purchases is certainly a step in the right direction. Let’s just hope more states start implementing similar laws.
