Couple Finds $52,000 In Treasure Buried In Their Back Yard

We’ve all dreamed about stumbling upon a piece of buried treasure in our homes, backyard, or while we were out for a walk. Unfortunately, it’s more than likely you’ll never find anything, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for this couple from New York.

Matthew and Maria Colonna-Emanuel live on Staten Island in New York, and since they moved into their house, the metal-looking object that was sticking out of the ground in the back yard was ignored. They first thought it was an electrical box or part of a cable, but when local wildlife disturbed the shrub surrounding the mysterious metal object, the couple realized it was actually a safe.

After digging up the safe and opening it, the couple discovered more than $52,000 worth of cash, jewelry and other miscellaneous items. Speaking with a local media outlet, Matthew said the safe contained “hundreds, jewelry, diamonds, engagement rings. Dozens of gold rings with jade. It was stunning.” The safe also contained a piece of paper with the original owner’s details on there – one of their neighbors.

The couple went to the neighbor’s house, “First, I knocked on the door and I asked them if they were ever robbed and they said they were” Matthew said. He discovered that his neighbor was robbed more than 6 years ago, on Boxing Day in 2011, with only the safe being taken. Police told the victims that they would never see there things again.

Matthew and Maria gave the contents of the safe back to their neighbors, and when asked why the couple didn’t keep the loot, Maria said “It wasn’t even a question. It wasn’t ours.” Matthew added “The reward is karma. Good karma.”
