$75,000 Per Year

Da Brat made a name for herself as one of the most iconic female rappers in the 90s. Her albums saw platinum status, and she made millions. However, after years of legal troubles, poor money management, and no longer being at the peak of her career, much of that money is now gone. Just how much is Da Brat’s net worth today?

Da Brat Net Worth

Da Brat is estimated to be worth only $100,000. In 2018, Da Brat filed for bankruptcy. She listed that she only had assets of $100,000, and her debts toppled to $8 million.

Da Brat Early Life

Da Brat, born Shawntae Harris, was born on April 14, 1974, in Chicago. She was born to Nadine Brewer and David Ray McCoy. Her parents were never married, which led to her splitting time between the two households as she grew up.

She often attended the Apostolic church and enjoyed singing in the choir. At Kenwood Academy of Chicago, where she attended high school, she enjoyed running track and was on the basketball team. She also attended the Academy of Scholastic Achievement, a charter school that works closely with youth and teenagers that are considered at-risk. She graduated in 1992.

Shawntae Harris began rapping when she was only eleven years old. She was discovered when she was just a teenager.

Da Brat Career

Da Brat was one of the first female rappers to make a name for herself in the 90s. She is often compared to groups like Salt N Peppa. Her debut album Funkdafied sold over a million copies and declared her the first female rapper to achieve platinum status. It helped her make a name for herself that would see her to the top.

Jermaine Dupri first discovered her in 1992 after winning an amateur rap contest by Yo!MTV raps. As part of her prize, she got to meet Kriss Kross. He then introduced her to Jermaine Dupri, who immediately recognized her rap game and signed her to his label So So Def Records.

He helped her release her first album, Funkdafied, which saw instant success. It enjoyed three months at the top of the Billboard Charts. The single Funkdafied also reached the top spot on both the Billboard and Rap charts. Give It 2 You was another hot single from the album, but it only made it to #26 on the Hot 100 chart.

In 1996, Da Brat released another album titled Anuthatantrum. It featured her hit songs Ghetto Love and Sittin On Top Of Tha World. The album also featured T-Boz from TLC. The album was another instant success. After that album, Da Brat became known for appearing more on other people’s albums and in remixes to songs than for releasing more albums, but her popularity and the Da Brat net worth continued to increase. Other notable moments from her career and the Da Brat net worth include:

  • Appeared on a remix of Mariah Carey’s Always Be My Baby
  • Worked with Dru Hill, Lil Kim, Missy Elliot, Left Eye, Angie Martinez, and Destiny’s Child
  • Worked with Kriss Kross on Da Bomb and Young, Rich and Dangerous
  • Made her film debut with Kazaam in 1996, in which she starred with Shaq
  • She released a third album, Unrestricted, in 2000, which was also a hit. It made it to the top of the Billboard Chart. However, it wasn’t as popular as her other albums, and her work with Tyrese wasn’t as extensive as she thought it would be.
  • Was a featured artist on a Survivor remix by Destiny’s Child
  • The female solo rapper starred in Glitter, a film by Mariah Carey
  • Her fourth album, Limelight, Luv & Nightclubs, was released in 2003
  • Was on The Surreal Life

She also made a huge comeback in 2005 when she worked with Jermaine Dupri and was featured on another hit remix. Soon after, she did tours with Mariah Carey, working with Kelly Rowland. She was also on The Fit Club, a show on VH1.

Legal Problems

In 2007, Da Brat attacked a hostess at a restaurant. She wound up pleading guilty to assault charges, and in 2014 the victim was granted a judgment of $6.4 million. She spent three years incarcerated as a result of the incident. While this led to a successful YouTube channel in which Da Brat talked about the transition from being released from prison, that was not enough to make the Da Brat net worth what it needed.

Da Brat Bankruptcy

After being released, Da Brat ran into quite a few financial problems. She filed for bankruptcy in 2018 and cited the $6.4 million judgment as one of the debts/liabilities she owed. She also owed money to the IRS, Sony Music, Ally Bank, and others. According to the filing, her annual income was estimated to be around $75,000.

The victim of the assault filed a claim demanding that her judgment not be included in the bankruptcy, and she reported that it was accumulating interest. At that point, Da Brat owed her $8 million and had yet to pay her anything.

Personal Life Da Brat

Da Brat became notorious for keeping her personal life out of the public eye. That changed in 2020 when she announced a relationship with Jessica Dupart on Instagram.
