14-Year-Old Arrested After Teacher Thinks Homemade Clock Is A Bomb

A teenage boy has been arrested and suspended from school after teachers mistakenly thought that a home-made clock was actually a bomb. Ahmed Mohamed, 14, is a keen engineering student and had constructed a digital clock at home, which he then took into school to show his engineering teacher. However, another teacher noticed the device and reported it to authorities. Four police officers and his principal then interrogated the 14-year-old before he was suspended from MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas.

After being pulled out of a lesson hours after the clock had been confiscated, Ahmed was handcuffed and questioned by officers. He explained to everyone throughout the incident that the device was nothing more than a digital clock but was unable to contact his parents and had to sit alone with police for several hours. According to reports, officers are still considering whether to bring charges of making a hoax bomb.

The incident has become highly controversial with many well-known figures giving support to the teenager. Both Wil Wheaton and Anil Dash have publically criticized the school and police, while many more have offered to help Ahmed with any legal problems that may arise. Even the President of the US, Barack Obama and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg have posted about the student.

Meanwhile some believe that he has been unfairly targeted because of his skin color and the fact that he is a Muslim. His father has stated that his religious background probably played a part while the Council on American-Islamic Relations said, “I think this wouldn’t even be a question if his name wasn’t Ahmed Mohamed. He is an excited kid who is very bright and wants to share it with his teachers.”
