‘Super Gonorrhea’ Is Spreading Through The United Kingdom

The idea of getting a sexually transmitted disease terrifies a lot of young people these days, especially as people become a little more promiscuous. Well, things are about to get a little scarier throughout the United Kingdom, as a super strain of gonorrhea is said to be spreading across the island nation.

In total, 16 cases of a drug-resistant gonorrhea have been diagnosed so far by local doctors. Leeds is currently the city where the most number of cases have been reported, as they have 12 so far. Macclesfield, Oldham, and Scunthorpe all have four cases between them. But the disease is spreading.

16 may not sound like a huge number, but this is just the number of reported cases so far. Gonorrhea can go unnoticed for quite some time, so many more people may have it already. Sexual health consultant Peter Greenhouse said: “This azithromycin highly-resistant outbreak is the first one that has triggered a national alert. It doesn’t sound like an awful lot of people, but the implication is there’s a lot more of this strain out there and we need to stamp it out as quickly as possible. If this becomes the predominant strain in the UK we’re in big trouble, so we have to be really meticulous in making sure each of these individuals has all their contacts traced and treated.”

When it comes to sex with someone you may not know well, using a condom is definitely the safest bet.
