Religious Freedom Advocates Are Divided On The Kim Davis Case

For those who haven’t already heard of her, Kim Davis is an extremely conservative Christian who works as a marriage clerk for the state of Kentucky. She recently went to jail for refusing to comply with new laws that stated that same-sex couples could receive marriage licenses. Many conservative Christians supported and stood behind Davis during her trial and jail time. However, not all Christians seem to be happy with the publicity this case is receiving.

Religious freedom is a controversial issue, and it will probably continue to be one for a long time. Many advocates for religious freedom are concerned that the Kim Davis case will ultimately hurt the public’s view of Christianity, and the cause of religious liberty itself.

Peter Wehner, a Christian commentator who served in the last three Republican presidential administrations, said: “I think she’s wrong on the merits, wrong theologically and her stance is harmful to Christians both in the religious liberty debate and in trying to present Christianity to the watching world.”

Many people, and many Christians, agree on the point that it is not the government’s place to interfere in religious ideologies and beliefs. Rather, it is the government’s place to implement policies that promote safety, equality, freedom, and justice. The unfortunate issue with freedom is that sometimes one person’s freedom infringes on another’s. While religious freedom is something that America was founded upon, equality is something that has been deemed necessary.
