Pet Ostrich Thinks And Acts Like A Dog

One would think that with the spread of pet shops and plenty of animals to take home, there wouldn’t be much of a need to go against the grain and pull something from the wild. But some would-be owners just want to prove how rebellious they can be. It can probably lead to disaster, but in one instance it led to absurdity — because there’s an ostrich out there that thinks it’s a dog.

South Africa’s Lynne MacTavish is the proud owner of the twenty-year-old Suki, an ostrich that’s been around her since she hatched the bird out of an egg. Incidentally, MacTavish — an operations manager at a wildlife reserve — is also the owner of a pair of dogs. Suki may have picked up on their habits, because she’s taken to eating as much as their food as she can. On top of that, it’s not uncommon for her to take the dogs’ bones. Neither motion tends to be appreciated by MacTavish’s dogs.

With that said, the ostrich hasn’t forgotten her roots just yet. She’ll still lay eggs wherever she can find a good spot — which tend to be plant pots — and most importantly, she’ll let her owner ride on her back anytime. Hopefully MacTavish’s bird is well-behaved; it would be a shame if she had to bring out the newspaper on a regular basis.
