New Injection Promises To Dissolve Your Double Chin

A new double-chin shot promises to get rid of chin fat for good. The FDA recently approved a shot called Kybella that will reportedly absorb double chin fat cells. The Los Angeles Times reports that patients could see noticeable results after only two treatments.

According to Dr. Derek H. Jones, a dermatology professor at the University of California, double chins are often “resistant to diet and exercise,” and will throw off an otherwise balanced and harmonious facial appearance. Jones is the leading investigator in Kybella’s clinical studies.

Kybella is said to act like the body’s own naturally produced deoxycholic acid, a bile acid that acts to solubilize fats. The maker of Kybella, Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, said in a statement that one treatment could include up to 50 injections. Kythera CEO Keith Leonard told The Washington Post that patients showed high satisfaction after two to four treatments.

Nearly 70 percent of participants in a survey done by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery listed a double chin as a top appearance concern. Leonard believes Kybella will “drive a very large market and leave very satisfied patients.” The FDA warns that Kybella does have some drawbacks, including pain, bruising and numbness, and if injected incorrectly, could destroy healthy skin cells instead of those pesky fat cells.
