More than 1,000 Dead in Southwest Syria in Just 2 Weeks

More than 1,000 people are dead and over 4,800 wounded in rebel-held Eastern Ghouta, located in southwestern Syria, in only two weeks. The medical facilities supported by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported that these numbers were only from February 18th until March 4th – meaning that more than 414 people were killed or injured each day.

Fifteen out of the 20 MSF-supported facilities have been bombed, with MSF urgently repeating “its call for an immediate ceasefire to be implemented and for medical supplies to be allowed into the besieged area to treat the sick and wounded.”

Both the UN and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin have called for ceasefires, allowing civilians to leave – but these have been ignored. The rebel fighters in Eastern Ghouta and the Syrian government have made accusations of either side breaking the truce.

Doctors are struggling to keep up with the injured; with surgeon Hamza Hassan stating “We are unable to cope with the overwhelming number of victims.”
