Fans Boycott Game Of Thrones After Controversial Scene

Game of Thrones is known for being an incredibly controversial show that addresses many topics such as incest, war, extreme violence, and many other heated topics, but HBO caused many viewers to second-guess continuing the show by airing an episode with a very dramatic rape scene.

Last Sunday’s episode is undoubtedly one of the most debated episodes of the series. In the episode, Sansa Stark marries Ramsay Bolton and during the wedding night, Ramsay makes Sansa undress and proceeds to violently rape her.

It was an unsettling scene to watch, and was clearly offensive to many. Although this is not the first time that the show has had a scene surrounding sexual assault, Jill Pantozzi, editor-in-chief of The Mary Sue, wrote that the scene was “not necessary to Sansa’s character development,” nor necessary to further prove Ramsay’s evil nature. Pantozzi noted that Sansa is already a survivor and thus, “rape here, like in all instances, is not a necessary story-driving device.”

One U.S. Democratic Senator, Claire McCaskill even decided to call for a boycott of the show after watching the unsettling episode. However, other fans were not even remotely offended. For some, it only registered as a dramatic manifestation of Ramsay’s controlling malevolence and Sansa’s suffering. Whatever opinion is taken by the viewer, one thing is for certain: this will not be Game of Throne’s last controversial scene.
