Explosion In London Underground Leaves 2 Hospitalized

An explosion at Southgate Tube station in London has injured five people and sent two to the hospital at approximately 7 p.m. on Tuesday night. The explosion is believed to have started after an electronic device overheated, causing the battery to short circuit and explode.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said that two people were taken to the hospital, while three people were treated at the scene for injuries. Initially the police released a statement saying that they were dealing with reports of a suspicious package at the train station, however later added that the blast was not terror-related. The British Transport Police have confirmed the device that shirt-circuited was a power drill.

One nearby witness said “I was on the escalator and there was a massive bang. I saw sparks and smoke and just ran out of the station. All I could see was flames coming from the escalator as staff yelled at us to get out.” Another individual said on Twitter how he carried a woman up the stairs, “Fire in Southgate Tube Station escalator. I had to carry a woman over the middle onto the stairs and then up the stairs. Flare or electrics my guess. That was a bit terrifying. Some poor old lady was nearly trampled over till we calmed those running down the escalator.
