Canadian $5 Bills in Memory of Spock Found To Be Legal

If you haven’t heard by now, Leonard Nimoy, the actor who portrayed Spock on Star Trek, was pronounced dead last week. This revelation has upset people around the world, but those within Canada have been taking their pain out in another way; artistically. The good folks of Canada have been drawing Spock in a Vulcan salute on the Canadian $5 bill, which some people thought to be completely illegal.

The Bank of Canada has said that it is not illegal to deface or mutilate banknotes. The drawings of Spock cover the face of former Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier. Thankfully, the picture already looks a little like Spock, the only things required were the hair, facial hair, and the ears.

Tweets from the Canadian Design Resource group called for all doodlers to continue ‘Spocking’ their $5 bills. Unfortunately, Bank spokeswoman Josianne Menard does not encourage such behavior.

The Bank of Canada feels that writing and markings on bank notes are inappropriate as they are a symbol of our country and a source of national pride” Menard said in an email to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Menard claims the bills with Spock adorning them may not circulate as long as a regular bill and could be rejected by retailers around the country. Spock fans could care less, though, as they continue to draw the famous science fiction character on their bills.
