Campaign Urges Ban On Sex Robots

A newly launched campaign is urging governments and technology companies to ban the making of robots that are purposely designed to be used for sex. Those involved argue that the increasingly sophisticated sex dolls are unhealthy and promote negative views of women as belongings as well as confirming that view that relationships should be just physical.

Sex robots seem to be a growing focus in the robotics industry and the models that they draw on – how they will look, what roles they would play – are very disturbing indeed,” said campaign leader Dr Kathleen Richardson. “We think that the creation of such robots will contribute to detrimental relationships between men and women, adults and children, men and men and women and women.”

The campaign comes as several companies are beginning to develop more life-like sex robots that will have some degree of artificial intelligence. They argue that they are not trying to objectify women or replace more conventional relationships but simply provide a fulfillment service for those without a partner.

One particular model that is currently in the prototype stages has already received thousands of pre-orders despite its price of $7,000. The Roxxxy sex robot will be able to talk to her owner and learn aspects of their life.

The physical act of sex will only be a small part of the time you spend with a sex robot – the majority of time will be spent socializing and interacting,” said chief executive Douglas Hines.
