At Least 50 People Overdosed On Synthetic Weed In New York

American Medical Response ambulances have responded to at least 50 overdoses in Syracuse, New York, since Saturday. People have been overdosing on synthetic weed, known as Spike and Spice. Spike is a synthetic form of marijuana which is a mix of herbs and spices which is sprayed with chemicals similar to THC – a psychoactive substance found in marijuana.

According to the Upstate New York Poison Center, Spike is an incredible dangerous drug, and potentially deadly. The chemical makeup of the drug varies between brand, and the varying compositions cause different reactions. Some of those who overdosed are reported to be relaxed, whilst others were so aggressive they had to be physically restrained.

Overdose rates are currently slowing, as 19 overdoses on Spike were reported by Tuesday, with seven of these occurring before 3 a.m. (local time) on Thursday. Hospital spokeswoman Kathleen Paice Froio, from Upstate University Hospital has said that they are seeing five to 10 overdoses per day.
