104-Year-Old Grandma May Be The World’s Oldest Street Artist

When you think of street artists, you will probably imagine teenagers who are spraying buildings with graffiti. Grace Brett is seeking to change that opinion, though, after the 104-year-old took to the roads the Scottish border town Selkirk and covered landmarks and buildings in specially knitted yarn artworks.

Brett is part of a group called the Souter Stormers, a collection of people who love knitting, and spent months creating hundreds of decorations that were sent all around the town to celebrate the Yarrow Ettrick and Selkirk festival.

I thought it was a really good idea to decorate the town and enjoyed having my crochet included – I didn’t think it was good enough,” said the 104-year-old. “I liked seeing my work showing with everyone else and thought the town looked lovely.

Her family confirmed that the centenarian, who now lives in a nursing home, had been knitting for years to keep herself busy. While she normally concentrates on creating items of clothing for her large number of children and grandchildren, Brett thought it would be nice to give back to the town she has lived in for more than 30 years.
