Lollipop Men And Women Set To Be Trained In Conflict Resolution To Tackle Road Rage Problem

A local council in the UK is looking into the possibility of training lollipop woman, otherwise known as school crossing guards, in conflict resolution as they look at ways to solve the road rage problem in Bristol. The council workers are usually used solely to help schoolchildren cross busy roads safely, but with the number of incidents involving motorists and cyclists increasing, officials have launched a consultation to examine potential solutions.

The scheme would be part of the Road Sharing Restorative Approach programme that could also see mediators posted on particularly problematic roads. Bristol City Council have partnered with local charities to discuss ideas after a spate of incidents involving irate road users.

I think through conversation and empathy we can hope to make people think about how they are using the road and become more mindful of other road users,” said Annali Grimes. “One solution might be to station mediators on roads to calm people down, or perhaps to teach lollipop ladies conflict resolution skills.
