U.K. Goes 55 Hours Without Using Coal For the First Time Ever

For the first time since power has been generated via coal in the United Kingdom, the country went for 55 hours without creating any electricity using their coal power plants. In an effort to move from coal generated power to more environmentally friendly and renewable sources of electricity, power stations across the UK went from 10:25 p.m. on Monday until 5:10 a.m. on Thursday without using any coal.

The UK was one of the first countries to adopt renewable energy, with more offshore wind turbines than any other country in the world. There are also fields of solar panels, which are increasing in number every day, to meet the electricity demands of the country. Once these demands are reached, which the government hopes to be on or before 2025, all traditional coal power plants will be switched off.

The country’s previous record was set in October, which was 40 coal-free hours. That means that the UK beat their previous record by almost 40 per cent! Hopefully more countries will follow suit, allowing everyone access to renewable sources of energy and moving away from fossil fuels, as it is currently the world’s largest contributor to greenhouse gas.
