Teacher Released From Hospital After Stopping School Shooting

A science teacher from Indiana has been released from hospital a day after he was shot when he tackled an armed student in his classroom. The teacher, Jason Seaman, was discharged from the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis on Saturday, while another student who was shot – 13-year-old Ella Whistler – is in a critical, but stable, condition.

The shooting occurred in Noblesville West Middle School in Noblesville, Indiana. Investigators have said that a student asked to be dismissed from the class and then returned with two guns, at approximately 9 a.m. on Friday morning. Two people were shot when the unnamed student entered the room, 13-year-old Ella Whistler, who is still in hospital in a critical but stable condition, and the class’ teacher Jason Seaman – who was released from hospital the following day.

The 29-year-old former college football player said his actions “were the only acceptable actions“.

“I want to make it clear that my actions on that day, in my mind, were the only acceptable actions I could have done given the circumstances. I deeply care for my students and their well-being. That is why I did what I did that day” Seaman said.

Speaking about Ella, Seaman said:

“I can’t say enough how proud of Ella I am and how we all should be. Her courage and strength at such a young age is nothing short of remarkable, and we should all continue to keep her in our minds as she continues to recover.”

Jackson Ramsey, a Noblesville High School student, started a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe, in an effort to raise money for Seaman. Ramsey’s girlfriend’s sister was in the classroom adjacent to where the shooting occurred, and has said that the goal of the campaign is to “repay a deed that cannot be repaid. He saved the lives of so many students.” At the time of writing, the campaign has raised $82,991 by 1,776 people around the world.

Seaman has thanked Ramsey for starting the campaign, saying:

I can’t really fathom how someone I have not personally met would do such an act of kindness and how the Noblesville community has been so generous in their response to it.”
