Shocking New Body Shaming Trend Goes Viral

You are probably familiar with the #KylieJennerLipChallenge, which requires participants to pump their lips up using a dangerous suction method, or, more recently #TheBellyButtonChallenge which asks its participants to reach around behind their body and touch their belly button, proving how thin they are.

Now, there’s a new trending hashtag that is equally as disturbing and dangerous to the minds of its participants thanks to the superficial messages they promote. This new trend is called #TheCollarboneChallenge, and while it doesn’t require altering your body or contorting unnaturally, it is just as damaging to young girls’ self-esteem as other trending body challenges.

The Collarbone Challenge entails placing quarters (the “rules” declare they must be standing) atop the clavicle, nestled in the ridge on either side of the body below the shoulders. The more quarters a person can keep standing in this area, the thinner they are (according to this challenge). While the trend originated in China, it didn’t take long to make its way around the world and onto the social media accounts of thousands of people.

Luckily, there are other trending hashtags like #EffYourBeautyStandards and #HonorMyCurves that promote a much more positive body image, and will hopefully limit, if not eliminate, the use of more negative challenges.
