Pakistan Sets Record For Highest Temperature in April

Pakistan has just become the record holder for the hottest day in April since records began in 1930’s. The record temperature was set on Monday, April 30th, in the city of Nawabshah, which has a population of 1.1 million and is approximately 180 kilometers north-east of Karachi.

The previous April record temperature in Pakistan was 50.0°C, with the temperature on Monday beating this by 0.2°C; with temperatures reaching up to 50.2 degrees Celsius (122.3 degrees Fahrenheit). This city has a history of high temperatures, oftentimes temperatures in May, ahead of the summer monsoon, reach 53°C.

The heat was reportedly unbearable, with dozens succumbing to heatstroke, and sadly two teenagers drowned after attempting to cool off in a canal. Laborers and motorcyclists were the worst to be affected by heatstroke, and things got even worse when blackouts occurred.

The Guinness World Records notes that the highest recorded temperature anywhere on the planet is in Death Valley, United States. This temperature was 56.7°C (134.1F) in July 1913. The record in Pakistan comes just days after the UK recorded its hottest day in April in over 50 years, reaching 29.1°C
