North Korea Set To Match Time Zone Of South Korea

North Korea’s time zone is currently 30 minutes behind South Korea’s, and in an attempt to reconcile with the South, Kim Jong Un has said that the 30-minute difference will be changed on May 5th. Kim himself has said that this unification of the time zones between the North and the South will be a conciliatory gesture in the hopes of improving relations between the two nations.

Pyongyang, North Korea’s capital, changed the nation’s time zone unexpectedly in 2015, returning to the time zone used before Japan’s rule of the peninsula between 1910 and 1945. Yoon Young-chan, South Korean President’s spokesman, said that Kim found it “heartbreaking” that two clocks were hanging at the summit showing the different timezones.

Yoon had quoted Kim saying “Since we were the ones who made the change from the standard time, we will go back to the original time. You can announce it publicly.”
