Female Lawyers Asked To Take Off Their Bras Before Entering Jails

Female defense lawyers in Maine are upset with the new jail policy that requires them to take off their bras before entering jail. The policy was introduced at the Portland’s Cumberland County Jail. The lawyers were told that the policy was introduced because their underwire bras have been setting off the metal detectors.

Amy Fairfield, a lawyer, said that she went to prison a few days back to meet with her client, and a deputy instructed her to go to the restroom to take off her undergarment because it set off the metal detector at the prison. When Fairfield refused to remove her bra, she was turned away. She said that earlier she was instructed to remove her hairclip, rings and bracelets in jail; however, she has never been stopped for her bra.

The deputy told Amy Fairfield that the policy had been imposed by the administrator of the jail, Maj. John Costello. Fairfield said that she tried to contact the jail administrator, but he has not responded.
