Woman Receives Probation For Attempting To Hang A 16-Month-Old

Nataliia Karia, 43, was sentenced on Monday to 10 years of probation for attempting to kill a toddler by hanging him.

The sentence was delivered in Hennepin County court after Karia plead guilty to attempted murder, third-degree assault, and criminal vehicular operation after running a pedestrian, cyclist, and another driver after fleeing her home in November 2016. Karia will have an ankle monitor on for at least two months, and must follow court-ordered mental health treatment. She is also not allowed to have unsupervised contact with her daughters or other young children.

The incident came to light when a father was dropping his son off at daycare ran from Karia’s home, when he was led to the basement and saw a 16-month-old boy hanging from a noose. The father released the child and escaped with the 16-month-old and his own son, before calling authorities.

Karia has spent 20 months in jail since the case against her began, and this time will be credited towards the 10-year probation she has been sentenced. Judge Jay Quam agreed with doctors who said she had a low risk of reoffending, and that her actions were “the perfect storm of factors unlikely to ever be repeated.”

In documents obtained, prosecutor Christina Warren said that Karia “left him hanging by a noose around his neck in her basement.”
