This Man Spent 22 Years Carving A Road Through A Mountain For His Dead Wife

A local man in India has spent the last 22 years of his life tearing down a mountain and carving a road in honor of his wife following her death. The mountain was said to be in the way of urgent medical care for those on the other side, so he decided to ensure no one had to deal with the loss again by constructing a road directly through the mountain.

Dashrath Manjhi decided to take it upon himself to break through the mountain and make it to the town, which was previously 34 miles around the mountain. The trip is now just nine miles, so no one will suffer a heartbreak after losing their loved one, like he did in 1959.

Manjhi worked day and night to complete the project as quickly as possible. He completed the mission in 1982, and the path is around 360 feet long, and over nine meters wide in some places.

The local government did not convert the cleaned surface into a usable road until 2012, though. Dashrath, unfortunately, died in 2007. He never got the chance to see his life’s work completed, but he was offered a state funeral. A Bollywood film is also being made of his life; Manjhi: The Mountain Man.
