New Study Finds Young Marijuana Smokers Have A Higher Risk For Diabetes

Scientists have found that if you have used marijuana at least 100 times by young adulthood, there’s an elevated chance that you’ll have pre-diabetes in middle adulthood. The new study looked at the health and habits of 3,000 Americans aged from 18 to 30.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health did not find a correlation of cannabis use with type 2 diabetes. However, the news should be taken seriously, as the poor blood sugar control of pre-diabetes is often a sign that full-blown diabetes is going to follow next. About one in ten people with pre-diabetes go on to develop diabetes.

The Independent reported that cannabis smokers were 65 percent more likely to have poor blood sugar control than subjects who didn’t smoke weed. People’s waist size and body mass index had no effect upon the link between pot use and pre-diabetes. The study results are puzzling, because earlier research seemed to show the opposite effect on marijuana users’ metabolic health.
