Man Shot After Killing Police Dog With An Axe

Police officers were called to a property in Schiedam, Holland, after receiving reports of a man wielding an axe on a balcony. The officers attempted to calm the man down, and even called his dad on the phone to talk to him. Unfortunately, the attempts to talk the man down were futile – as he continued to wave the axe around and shout – reportedly shouting Allahu akbar.

Armed police stormed the property and planned on subduing the man with a taser, however he lashed out at the officers. During the conflict, a police dog was seriously injured by the man, and sadly died due to his injuries. The man was rushed to hospital after being shot in the leg and stomach, and is now in a stable condition.

Schiedam Mayor Cor Lamers released a statement, stating that the man was Syrian and had been living in Schiedam with his father since 2017.

“The man was known to several help organisations but this was an escalation we had not seen coming. It is serious that this happened in a residential area. Although the situation took place in a home, bystanders did see what was happening. I can imagine that it was frightening. In the coming period, we will be conducting a full investigation into what happened.”

The Rotterdam Police wrote a tribute for the dog on Twitter, saying “This hero made the highest sacrifice yesterday during a detention in Schiedam.
