Ireland Legalizes Gay Marriage In A Referendum And Celebrities Celebrate On Social Media


Ireland legalized gay marriage in a referendum, therefore becoming the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote. Millions of people showed up to cast their vote on May 22nd. The records say over 60% of those eligible voted and according to The New York Times, the vote was 62 percent in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage. Ireland joined 18 other countries who already have gay marriage legalized.

After the official results came in, many celebrities took to Twitter and Instagram to celebrate. Sam Smith posted to his social media accounts: “So happy Ireland have passed the law to get married there. Still genuinely shocks me thou, that this is only just happening!!” Irishman Hozier, as well as Irish celebrity figure Graham Norton also voiced their excitement. Ellen joined the celebration as well saying: “Ireland did it! The 1st country to legalize marriage equality by popular vote, but they won’t be the last! What an incredible accomplishment” on her Twitter account.
