Hospital Tells Woman Her Mom Died And Later Retracts Their Statement
A medical staff member recently told a woman that her mother had passed away. The staff member allowed the woman to say goodbye and a few moments later, they told the her that her mother was actually alive.
Phyllis Lilley’s 61-year-old daughter Liz Page and her 72-year-old husband, Gerry, were distraught when nurses took them to the body of another woman to say their goodbyes. Page said at first she didn’t realize the body she was viewing wasn’t her beloved mother. “I know it sounds ridiculous that we didn’t realize it was the wrong body. When you’re told your mum has died and you’re shown into a room, it just doesn’t enter your mind that it won’t be her.“
Seven hours later, a hospital official phoned Phyllis Lilley’s family to tell them they made a terrible mistake. The hospital told them that Phyllis was not dead, and that she was in another part of the hospital ward. Liz said that the hospital staff members told them that they woman whose body they viewed had a similar name to Phyllis’.
94-year-old Phyllis was admitted to the Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester after suffering from a stroke. Her daughter, Liz, said that throughout the heartache, she is relieved that her mother is alive.
“I didn’t sleep very well and at about 4.50am I had a phone call from the hospital. They said they were sorry to say my mum had passed away and asked if I wanted to see her. It was news I was expecting to hear. A nurse showed us into the cubicle. We were there about three or four minutes I suppose. I just said, ‘Goodbye’ and kissed her forehead and came out.“
