Hospital Digs Through Garbage Afer Losing Newborn’s Remains

It is always unfortunate to hear of a newborn baby losing their life, but when the hospital where the mother gave birth loses the remains of said baby before they can be brought to the grieving family, then things are taking a turn for the worse.

That is, unfortunately, exactly what happened in Cincinnati, Ohio. A newborn infant lost its life at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, but the doctors attending to the distressed family ended up losing the body afterwards. Hospital officials then dug through the garbage and searched the local landfill, before they offered an apology to the woman.

The leader of the UC Health system offered an apology, calling this an “unacceptable situation.” CEO Richard Lofgren said: “I promise the family that we will never let a situation like this happen again. I and the entire executive team of UC Health are examining every fact, every process, and every action to identify precisely how this could possibly happen. We have already begun to put in place steps to ensure that this kind of tragic human error cannot occur again.”

The child, a baby girl who had been delivered prematurely earlier this month, plus her twin brother, only lived for an hour after being brought into the world. Police are unclear as to what happened to the boy’s body, but it never managed to enter the hospital morgue where it should have been.
