George R.R. Martin Pranks Bring The Chills For April Fools

Fans of books and TV alike know the name “George R.R. Martin” all too well. As the mastermind behind plenty of stories — and the backbone of the infamous Game of Thrones series — fans from all over are waiting with bated breath for news on his long-teased novel, Winds of Winter. Those very same fans would do well to avoid news on April 1st; recent trends may well give a few of them reason to panic, however unfounded.

Metro has gotten in on the action, claiming — in the spirit of the holiday — that Winds of Winter has been put on indefinite hold, and the tied-in show will finish the story on his behalf. “His” reasoning is that true fans would prefer to see the story unfold on their screens with all the special effects the show’s crew can muster; in the meantime, he’ll focus on a spin-off involving a wedding planner. Not to be outdone, a Reddit post announces that Martin will take a break from the series to focus on a young adult novel, with a link to a single book rather than any of the expected ones on Martin’s docket. Many were not amused, especially with sites like Screen Rant working harsh realities into the joke in the past.

Fans can rest easy, of course. Martin has explained in a recent post that his attention is still on finishing Winds of Winter; he’s gone so far as to cancel several convention meetings and decline behind-the-scenes work on Game of Thrones so he can focus on what matters. In other words, he intends to have his story finished and his fans sated — so they can count on that far more than any simple joke.
