Finnish University Students Given Official ‘Survival Kits’

The Finnish city of Lahti has begun to hand out specially made ‘survival kits’ to students who are attending college and university in the area. The packs come in a small cardboard box and include items from a range of local businesses.

The boxes contain washing up brushes for the kitchen, a bus pass to be used on local travel services, bed sheets, socks, underwear, porridge and even a snack from the area called salmiakki. They have been carefully created by the local government and university to introduce students to the city and help them to settle in. Meanwhile, small businesses have contributed so that they can get some free marketing and ensure that the new students are sampling their products first hand.

The kits have apparently been very popular with students who have even suggested some other items that they could include, such as bike locks to help prevent theft of bicycles in the city. Mari Rosberg of the Lahti University of Applied Sciences also revealed that other cities in Finland have asked about setting up their own survival boxes.
