Crazed Tourists Are Preventing Sea Turtles From Nesting

Anyone who is interested in taking a bit of a vacation or doing some ecotourism throughout Costa Rica, the government has some words for you — be respectful. Officials within the Costa Rican Ministry of Environment and Energy are speaking out about how selfie-crazed tourists have been interfering and preventing the natural nesting habits of sea turtle species throughout the area by attempting to take a photograph with the sea creature.

According to CBC, hundreds of tourists have been swarming the seven-kilometer Ostonial Beach in Costa Rica in an effort to watch the olive ridley sea turtles come to shore and lay their eggs. These are, unfortunately, a threatened species.

The sea turtle numbers continue to decline, as there are 50 percent few than back in the 1960’s. Tourists are now trying to take selfies with them, which causes interference. This interference means many of the turtles are leaving the beach without laying their eggs.
