World Leaders Offered “Landfill Salad” At United Nations Meeting
World leaders are generally accustomed to eating some of the finest foods and dishes from around the world, especially when they visit the United Nations for a meeting with other leaders from across the planet. However, this weekend saw things get a little bit dirty and mixed up.
Chefs at the UN decided they would serve the “Landfill Salad,” which was made from food waste and served to over 30 world leaders who were in attendance for the global summit for sustainable development. The cooks thought it best to offer the type of food that would normally be found in a garbage bin instead of a five-star restaurant.
UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon said: “Our lunch was produced from food that would otherwise end up in landfills, emitting methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Food production and agriculture contribute as much to climate change as transportation. Yet more than a third of all food produced worldwide — over one billion tonnes of edible food each year — goes to waste. That is shameful when so many people suffer from hunger.”
The Landfill Salad was created using unwanted vegetable scraps, stalks, and leaves thrown out by major food producers. A vegetable burger was also on the menu, which was made of the pulp left from juicing, which wastes the majority of produce being sold.
The world leaders appeared to be completely fine with this meal. It’s a bit humbling to see them getting dirty and eating the food that feeds animals instead of humans generally.
