“Granny Hair” Becoming More And More Popular

Trying to hide gray hair with color dyes might become a thing of the past. As it turns out, gray hair is becoming popular, being embraced by celebrities such as Rihanna, Pink, Lady Gaga, Nicole Ritchie and Kelly Osborne. Here’s a picture of Lady Gaga sporting a gray-platinum look at the Vanity-Fair Oscar Party in February 2015:

Fashion designers such as Gareth Pugh, Chanel and Jean-Paul Gaultier were the original ones to have their models sport silver hair, and now it’s catching on. Jan-Marie Arteca, a New York hair stylist, said that “Granny hair is basically silver hair, any tone of gray in your hair: steel gray, silvery gray, really, really white, platinum-ish with either violet or silver undertones”.

Many other fashion blogs and magazines are claiming it’s the hottest trend in women’s hair. The problem is, however, that granny hair is hard to get. A woman’s hair must be bleached first, a process that takes nearly two hours, and then the color must be applied – sometimes twice – which can take up to another five hours. Depending on the particular colors desired, the dying process can cost anywhere from $200 to $700. Touch-ups are necessary as well, required about once per month. It just goes to show you that celebrities and magazines can make anything popular.
