10 Photos Of Iconic Landmarks Before They Were Completed

Architecture, Design, History, Lists, Other

When it comes to some of the world’s most famous landmarks, we take for granted the fact that at one time or another they simply weren’t standing. We don’t look at a picture of the Eiffel tower and wonder what it looked like before the structure was built. We don’t drive over the Golden Gate Bridge and wonder what was there before this was built. Sometimes we really should take the time to think about these things because we’ll likely be surprised. Check out our list of 10 rare photos of iconic world landmarks before they were completed and get ready to marvel at what these things looked like while they were being constructed.

The White House

This picture actually shows the construction on the modern day West Wing (where the President works) that went on during 1933. The pic shows just how much bigger the White House is today than it was.

Manhattan Bridge

This bridge is one of the larger in the United States and obviously allows New Yorkers to get from one part of their vast city to another. The bridge was started in 1901 and was finished in 1912.

Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial took quite a bit of time to build, thanks to massive amount of marble used, as well as the sheer size of the place. Construction was started in 1914 and was finally finished in 1922.

The Space Needle

This Canadian landmark is another on this list that was built specifically for a World’s Fair. The structure was finished in 1962 but this picture shows the early days of the construction.

The World Trade Center Towers

This photo is during the middle of construction for these towers back in 1970. You can see the cranes at the top ready to bring up more materials. The buildings were finally finished in 1973.

The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty’s construction was started in 1875 and was finally finished in 1886. Here you can see work crews near the top of the structure working on the torch.

Atomium

The construction of this landmark in Brussels, Belgium was started in 1956 and was completed in 1958. This was a structure built for the 1958 World’s Fair and it recently went through a two year period where it was closed in order to renovate it.

The Golden Gate Bridge

The bridge was completed in 1937 but it certainly wasn’t built in a day. This photo shows the massive gap in between one end and another and some bystanders check out the construction.

Christ The Redeemer Statue

This statue, located in Brazil took almost a decade to complete. Construction started in 1922 and wasn’t finished until 1931. This picture shows it when it was almost complete but still needed a ton of work.

The Eiffel Tower

Here we have two photos side by side as the Eiffel tower starts to get taller and taller. This Paris landmark was started in January of 1887 and was completed in March of 1889.
