People love to hear about disasters, as long as it does not happen within their local area. Despite being the smartest creature on the face of the planet, human beings absolutely love to make terrible mistakes and destroy almost everything we have and hold dear to us. The following catastrophic events, while terrible at the time, truly could have been prevented if we had taken some more precautions and handled everything a tad bit better. Here are ten deadly disasters we could have stopped from happening.

Fukushima Nuclear Plant

Back on one fateful day in March of 2012, a tsunami triggered destroyed the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, causing three reactors to melt down and explode. The preventative standards in place were quite bad.

Deepwater Horizon

A total of 11 people died on the Deepwater Horizon when it sunk into the ocean, causing a massive oil spill. Nearly five million barrels worth of oil were tossed into the Gulf of Mexico, and it could have been prevented if BP had better management.

Challenger And Columbia Disasters

In 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded just moments after it took off from the platform. In 2003, Space Shuttle Columbia basically vaporized when it reentered the atmosphere. Both of these could have been prevented if NASA had not ignored failures on the ships.

Hamlet Processing Plant Fire

On September 3, 1991, seven of the nine fire doors to the Imperial Foods Hamlet processing plant were locked when a hydraulic line began to fail. The line spewed gallons worth of fluid, which ignited from the gas burners. 25 died in the ensuing fires.

New Zealand Coal Mine Disaster

The Pike River coal mine in New Zealand was thought to bring in a valuable export for the country. Sadly, an explosion in the machinery caused 29 miners to become trapped inside. The management for the mine were pressured to produce results, so they ignored the issues.

Air France Flight 447 Crash

Sadly, 228 people died when Air France Flight 447 crashed into the ocean, which killed everyone on board. The plane flew through a thunderstorm, and the speed sensor became clogged up with ice. The inexperienced crew could not control the plane.

Kiss Nightclub Fire

In January of 2013, a storm of neglect and management oversight ended up killing over 230 people in the Kiss Nightclub in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The club had been used an expired fire safety certificate, and was over capacity.

New Orleans Levee Failure

During the terrifying experience that was Hurricane Katrina, a lot of people lost their homes and their lives in New Orleans. Over 1,800 people died when the levee broke, which could have been prevented if the inspection and maintenance was up to date.

The Dust Bowl

During the 1930s, the Dust Bowl basically encompassed the United States. The dust storms killed hundreds of miles of land, along with uncountable lives who were stuck in the storm or died from starvation. The ensuing drought was as bad as the storms, however this could have been prevented if dryland farming methods were used.

2010 Haiti Earthquake

During the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, around 316,000 died in the chaos. The 7.0 magnitude quake could not have been prevented, but geophysicists who knew of the incoming quake were completely ignored when they told people to move from the area.
