Man Played Beatles On Guitar During An Open Brain Surgery
A man who was required to remain awake while doctors performed his open brain surgery decided he would play the Beatles classic “Yesterday” on his guitar in order to pass the time, reports Daily Mail. Anthony Kulkamp from Brazil went under the knife to remove a tumor within his brain. The 33-year-old decided to entertain the operating doctors and himself by balancing his acoustic guitar on his stomach while undergoing the surgery.
Kulkamp, a professional guitarist for over 20 years, discovered the tumor just 15 days after his son was born. The first sign of the tumor was when he began to stammer and could not remember the name of his car. During the procedure, Kulkamp started with a song, entitled Emanuel, he wrote for his son before playing the Beatles’ hit. Kulkamp said “I played six songs at certain times. My right hand was a bit weaker because that was the side that they were operating on. So I stopped and rested. I was interspersing songs and talking with them. The doctors asked me to repeat one of the country songs so I even had an encore.”
Patients are generally told to remain awake during procedures of this nature, that way the doctors can perform cerebral monitoring. There is a chance of certain brain functions, such as sensory, motor, and speech, becoming damaged.
