Horror Master Wes Craven Dies At 76

One of the true masters of the horror genre passed away on Sunday night, as Wes Craven died at the age of 76. The director and producer, who was behind such classic scares as Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, had been battling brain cancer. While there are a couple of movies he’s well known for, it’s probable that the average movie goer wasn’t aware of just how tied into the modern horror movie Craven really was.

He wrote, directed and edited the 1972 rape-revenge fantasy horror The Last House on the Left. He followed that up with a tale of irradiated hillbilly mutants in The Hills Have Eyes. It was in 1984 that Wes Craven forever became known as a man who could scare that pants off you with the original Nightmare on Elm Street. That particular movie was so popular there have been almost too many sequels and reboots to count.

In 1996, Craven showed he had the talent to take a different look at the horror genre with the release of Scream. This film had plenty of belly laughs but also fit the bill as an actual horror movie. He recently helped launch the MTV Network version of the film, which was in its first season as an adapted series.
