Criminals Trying To Infiltrate UK Prisons With Drones

Police in the UK have issued a warning to the public after the Ministry of Justice revealed that there have been several attempts to infiltrate prisons in the country recently. The increasing popularity of drones has made all prisons in the UK a threat and authorities will have to do more to ensure that they aren’t able to reach inmates who are incarcerated.

According to officials, the drones have been used to try to smuggle drugs, mobile phones and other contraband into prison buildings in the last five months. It has sparked fears that the devices could be used to allow weapons to be taken by prisoners or to plan an escape attempt. While no evidence has been found that any drone has successfully been used to smuggle items into facilities, guards have found drones in the grounds of some secure buildings.

In a nutshell, our intelligence suggests that the use of UAVs to release items into our prisons is an emerging threat,” said Eve Richard from the National Offender Management Service. “It’s not a huge issue at the moment but there is the potential for it to increase and become more of an issue.

The problem has arisen because of the fact that prison guards have never had to deal with aerial threats before and do not have the resources to prevent drones from flying over the buildings they are protecting.
