Cop Jailed For 5 Years For Beating Customer Over ‘Stolen’ Tomato

Trevor King, a 49-year-old former Atlanta police officer, was sentenced to five years in prison yesterday after he beat a man for “stealing” a tomato in October 2014. King was off-duty at Walmart when he noticed a customer, 53-year-old Tyrone Carnegay, weighing a tomato and then walk towards the store’s exit.

King stopped Carnegay near the door and began to beat him seven times with his baton, resulting in Carnegay suffering two broken bones in his right leg and rupturing an artery. As Carnegay lay on the floor bleeding from his injuries, King searched him and found a receipt for the tomato in his bag. The receipt shows that Carnegay paid for the tomato just minutes before he was attacked by King.

Prosecutors said “King the wrote a false report to cover up his unjustified assault. Additionally, King charged the victim with obstructing a shoplifting investigation and with assaulting a police officer.” King was indicted in December 2016 and retired the following month.

Carnegay is still in pain from the incident, saying “I’ve got a broken leg. I’ve got a titanium pole in it. I have a couple knots and infections from bolts.” Both Carnegay and his attorney have filed a civil suit against Walmart, however this matter is still ongoing.
