California Is Now Legalizing Assisted Suicide

Euthanasia, otherwise known as assisted suicide, has always been a controversial topic for governments, people, and medical institutions. Many people argue this is completely immoral and may have implications after the person has died. However, California has just recently become the fifth state within the United States to pass a law saying assisted suicide is completely legal.

This announcement comes after California Governor Jerry Brown spoke on his own experiences. He then consulted a Catholic bishop, plus two of his own doctors, and some of his personal friends.

In the end, Gov. Brown said: “In the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death. I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill.”

Doctors within Oregon, Washington, Vermont, and Montana are already capable of prescribing drugs that will end someone’s life. California’s bill, though already passed, won’t take affect until the session formally ends in mid-2016.
