10,000 Syrian Refugees To Be Allowed Into The United States
In the wake of media showcased Syrian refugee crisis, the Obama Administration has taken the issue by the reigns—and laid-out the welcome mat. During the next twelve-or-so-months, the United States will likely to allow upwards of 10,000 Syrian refugees onto American soil.
However, despite the cordial gesture, not all White House members believe the endeavor is large enough. In fact, many think it’s quite a small feat; outlying European countries have taken upwards of 20,000 Syrian refugees—in a weekend, alone. Germany is expected to allow upwards of 800,000 refugees this year.
“This is totally within the realm [to allow for more Syrian immigrants into our boarders] of what the current system on autopilot could do. This is not time for autopilot. This is time to really ramp things up,” said Melanie Nezer, vice president of HIAS. It may be time to add a human element to that metaphorical autonomous plane. The United States now annually allows upwards of 70,000 refugees from around the world, up 5,000 from last year.
